Product Overview

Looking for a plant that loves the Texas heat and asks for more? Need something to cover up a trellis or fence? Try Malabar spinach (Basella alba)!

While not a true spinach, this vining, edible plant produces tons of round leaves that can be picked, cooked, and eaten like spinach. Its beautiful purple berries will re-seed every year, and can be used in dyeing applications.

  • Plant: March through August in Zone 8b. Partial shade to full sun preferred.
  • Harvest: June through November in Zone 8b.
  • Interest: Deep green foliage on purple vines when mature, with dark purple berries for fruit.
