Roselle hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffais a flowering plant native to Africa, but is known now throughout the world as the vitamin C-rich main ingredient used in dishes and drinks like jamaica and carcade.

The deep red fruits (calyces) are picked and then steeped to make various foods, while the stems can be used to make fiber.

  • Plant: Transplant March through September in Zone 8b. Partial shade to full sun preferred.
  • Harvest/Prune: Pick fruits when they are fully colored and large enough to just barely enclose in one's palm, at roughly six months of plant maturity.
  • Interest: tall but thinly-spaced green leaves give way to beautiful, teardrop-shaped red fruits.
