Spineless Prickly Pear

Spineless Prickly Pear (Opuntia ellisiana) is an evergreen cactus native to South Texas and Mexico, well-suited to full sun or part shade. This low-water, resilient plant blooms in May and June, producing vibrant flowers followed by edible reddish-purple fruits known as Tunas or Cactus Apples, which ripen in late summer.

Spineless Prickly Pear is an important food source for native bees and offers culinary value to humans as well. Three parts of the cactus are edible: the inner pads can be used as a vegetable, the blossom petals can be added to salads, and the fruits can be enjoyed on their own or in various dishes.

For best results, transplant this cactus in spring or early summer in Zone 8b. The fruits can be harvested from September to November, while the pads can be harvested year-round, preferably in mid-morning.
